White Water, Cornwall. Oil on Board, 10"x10".
I have done this before but in Gouache, I was interested to do the same image in oil to see the difference. I like the wet feel of the oil and the bumps and lumps that give something to the painting.
Kirkstone Pass 1, Snow and Low Cloud. Oil on Board, 8"x8".
Driving from the sunshine of Ambleside, over the snowy Pass into sunshine in Patterdale. At the top of the Pass we were presented with a near monotone landscape. The near abstract subject was an exercise in marks, smudges and blending. I think I got the feel of the place.
Big Skies, West Yorkshire. Oil on Board, 8"x8".

I have started to focus on coastal scenes more recently, drawn to where moving water meets seemingly immovable objects. Trying to get that sense of energy, changing colours, depth, reflections and weather is the challenge.

Houses on the Hill, Staithes, Yorkshire, Oil on board, 8" x 8" Framed.
Showing at: Trattles & Geall Fine Arts, Whitby. (Sold)
Wet paint into wet background trying to work quickly in oil. The background was dark so a good exercise in overwhelming them with the lighter colours. It was also an exercise in getting away from painting windows as I know they're built to just creating the impression of windows.

Sandsend Breakwaters, Yorkshire. Oil on board, 8"x8", Framed.
Showing at: Trattles & Geall Fine Arts, Whitby. (Sold)
A wet day on the beach with the tide coming in. I am always drawn to these battered breakwaters as they calmly march into the oncoming waves. The overcast sky and the wet sand made for interesting reflections and a challenge to capture in paint.

Sunset in Porthleven, Cornwall. Oil on board, 10"x10", Framed, Private Collection.
A sunset that took all of ten minutes to sink beyond the horizon but produced a terrific colour display before it went. I like to remember these moments when the British summer isn't being particularly summery!

Sandsend in the wet, oil on board. Private collection.
A smashing if wet day. The Coastguard in their bad weather kit had just closed the road on the seafront, what you don't see is the lone police officer that has closed the other end...stood there, drenched!
